116 – The Long Way

Oh! a new update! So, Shade didn’t go to Tim’s room from the usual doo, she wants to give Tim a surprise,right?

I knew it I knew it I knew it!!!!! Just marathonned this comic after discovering it today. About 10 pages back it clicked – I know who Lady Darkheart is – oh this is so adorable! It’s totally not fair when your own mother starts playing matchmaking!!!!
She is not matchmaking, she is helping along what started on its own 😉
yeah that is a fair statement I guess. Although I still coo at realizing just why the boy did not freak out to see a monster/succubus under his bed. ^.^ Those two definitely make a cute couple!
As everyone is, I wonder what this “long way around” entails. Tim parent’s bed or somehow getting to his front door ?
In any case, that girl is learning, in a relationship, one must always surprise the other !
Pretty sure she just plans on showing up at his front door in costume.

In Tim’s case, though, it could. Consider #60 ( /?comic=60-noctis-interruptus <–append that to the website name), and you can see that he *knows* unscheduled things can happen in Shadow's world.
Now I’m curious about this “long way round” Is she going to come out in someone else’s bedroom, go outside and knock on Tim’s front door to surprise him? If so, bad idea Shadow, you’ve never been out in the human world before, you shouldn’t go alone! Do you even know Tim’s address?
I’m going to guess that if Lady Blackheart is also Tim’s mom, then she might have told Shadow about how to reach the house. She obviously knew that Shadow wanted to go trick-or-treating, and was willing to help, and it is equally obvious that just appearing inside Tim’s house is an impractical way to be introduced to Tim’s family.
Another possibility is that book she’s carrying. Depending on how old Tim’s neighborhood is, it could be a Nox book with a map of that human neighborhood.
That doesnt really depend on Ruth being Blackheart. Assume for the moment they are not the same. You’ve got the missing mother able to sneak in and out of the sisterhood unseen, no doubt from scouting the portals and back roads during those missing years. This would include knowing where those portals lead, and the surrounding areas. From this it is likely she has visited many countries on earth. Even if she had no other reason to scout Tims local neighborhood, once she noticed Shadow heading down the same road she went, theres definite cause to study the area and nearby portals for escape routes should she need to step in and rescue the girl from the humans.
In #57 ( /?comic=57-moving-forward <–append that to the website name) we are told that Shadow's guild only has limited access to portals, only to portals leading under beds. Nothing so far hints that Lady Blackheart has changed that limitation for Shadow. We do know from #103 ( /?comic=103-boy-trouble ) that it is normal for the Bed Bugs to go out on "rounds", presumably to collect points for scaring humans. This implies that quite a few doorways leading under beds are known/tested, and given human mobility all through the last half of the last century, it could be easy for some human family to not be in their house while on vacation somewhere. Of the doorways that Shadow usually uses, she will know which ones haven't been "fruitful" in terms of scaring –except for her, if no one is home, that gives her a chance to do some relatively safe human-world exploring, fruitful in another way. I won't say she has gone outside any such house, but she might have peeked out the doorway. And there are always windows. What she has learned from Tim about the human world (and through watching stuff on TV) can only help her do some exploring more safely.
I fully agree that Lady Blackheart has access to lots more portals than Shadow, plus (likely) even more tricks, associated with vanishing acts in #88 ( /?comic=88-the-missing-mother ) and #91 ( /?comic=91-speak-of-the-devil ). It is easy to assume that for L.B., the more she learned about the human world, the better-able she became, to scare humans and score points. #95 ( /?comic=95-the-same-mistakes ) basically tells us that L.B. found something that mattered more to her than scoring scare-points, and made mistakes because of that. To the extent she recognizes Shadow following a similar path, it could be something of a "wisdom" for Shadow to avoid driving Tim away, while still being free to scare other humans.
Another option, meshing with what you said, is the possibility that L.B. acquired a human map of Tim's neighborhood, and has marked various portal-points on it, and given that to Shadow. Since L.B. has promised Lady Moonlight (#91) to protect Shadow, I won't disagree with the last part of what you wrote. We can only wait and see….
There is a little inconsistency that runs through the comics. If pupils of noxians work as ones of cats, then they must look like vertical lines when there is too much light (for example, while in the human world) and as circles when there is “normal” level of luminosity (for example, while in their homeworld). But look at Midnight’s face on this page, her pupils are still vertical lines, it should mean that there is still too much light.

True but the eyes can also Dilate when perturbed in many fashions. Anger, annoyance, being on high alert to threats.
I’m wondering not so much where she is going to be popping out of, but why she is heading up in her pajamas, and no cloak.
That is actually a very good point you have there !
I expect she didn’t want any Nox folk to see her Halloween get-up. So, if I’m right about another thing I posted here, she will come out under a bed in an unoccupied house, and change there before leaving that house.

Compare page 97 with what she usually wears. A bottomless slip seems to be her normal workwear.

That… actually answers one question, but opens another. Clearly Nox has tailors that make the guild robes, so is collecting human clothing a thing down there? Shade has her own reasons for going after the socks, of course, but is the rest of it considered normal to acquire on raids? Shadow did say Midnight “snagged” the leggings a while back…
@Kikinaak, if humans are for scaring, it could follow that the Nox folk are somewhat prejudiced, and therefore other indignities against humans (like theft) is perfectly OK –especially if the Nox folk consider themselves to be “monsters”. Also, maybe the Nox tailors only make robes (boring), so anyone who wants variety needs to go elsewhere. 🙂
One more Sunday and I finally get to see a monster as a human or what ever she’s going as welp I hope nothing bad happens today but I have a sneaking suspicion that I will what tricks do you have up your sleeves Brandon

Unless it’s randomly in the background while they’re doing something else, I doubt I’ll be devoting much time to having them specifically watching stuff… also I can think of several other better things for them to watch first.
Indeed. This story has 2 connected worlds. A movie where a bunch of idiots gamble their lives to walk the space between worlds, might not be the best influence on our impressionable young heroine.

Having Shadow knock at the front door does make everything much less tense. Having to explain to his Mother how Shadow got into his room without her knowing would not be an easy thing to do.
