“Halloween is just nothing” yes, you’re almost correct.
The modern festival of Halloween has lost its religious connotations (once All Hallow’s Eve) and is merely a very sucessful marketing exercise for the sugar industry.
In short, like everything that marketing and industry get hold of, it’s CORRUPT.
All Hallow’s and associated All Saints’ and All Souls’ days, as well as Dia De Los Muertos are still observed in the Catholic churches for their respective locations/countries.
Furthermore, it’s only as corrupt as you allow it to be within your household.
I do not buy commercially made candy – I make homemade treats for family, friends and longtime good neighbors. Since we live in a relatively isolated country lane with limited neighbors and almost no strangers trick or treating, this isnt an issue for me and my wife. This is the beginning of our candy making season, ending after New Years Day.
Decorations are homemade as well, as is costumes. We enjoy bonfires and ghost stories told by firelight, rarely do we watch any new horror films. The entire neighborhood has an All Hallow’s Eve block party yearly, which also starts off our small community’s charity donation drives.
We’ve been doing this for 25 years now since we first moved in, and it’ll be a tradition in our community until I breath my last breath.
Holidays are what YOU make them, not any other way.

I heartily agree and good for you taking a principled stand.
For myself, not bring Christian, there’s no religious baggage to that (or many other) dates.
Culturally, I can ‘go with the flow’ for Xmas as a family and social event. Easter was always a good time for the motorcycle races (pagan- so,booze, loud music, fast women) but the other 21 or so “holy” days — pffffft!

you know i became MUCH more interested in Samhain (all hallows eve) and christmas (yule or modrahnit) when i found out that they were originally pagan.
