Midnight is assigned to haunt Marcy. Maybe she was inspired by Shadow and made contact. That’s why she knows, and perhaps is pulling the strings so she can have Shadow to herself.

So Shadow is Planing to go from “The monster under his bed ” to “the monster on his bed”
Shadow’s original intent may well have been ‘ the monster IN his bed’ but with Marcy being on the scene, Shadow could well become ‘the monster FROM under his bed’ or indeed ‘the blood-drenched green-eyed monster with claws and fangs who drags an interfering rival back UNDER the bed to a sticky end’.
