#172 “Intervention”
Looks like Tim’s about to have one heck of a day… and Ruth does NOT seem very thrilled about coming clean. Yeesh.

So the parents CAN hear them. Looks like it’s time to give Tim the TALK. The “why it’s okay to bang alien chicks” talk aka the Kirk Lecture, that is.
“If they’re sentient and give consent, it’s okay.”
-Jack Harkness, probably
Never heard of the Harkness Test?
Considering he is her son, part of that talk is long overdue.
Not really, if Tim had never met Shadow, was dating a human fellow student and having an ” Is it time we had sex?” conversation/argument Ruth wouldn’t have any reason to tell him he was half-hour. Now if they were talking about having children, yes she would need to have “The Talk” as the chances of having a child with Noxian (?) features is a very high probability (unless Noxian genes are recessive with human genes dominant) and he would have to know the truth about his mom.
Even with Tim seeing Shadow regularly, it wouldn’t really be necessary unless the relationship became serious and they decided to openly date, have sex or talk about going steady, get engaged or married. Then it would be “All Hands on Deck”, it’s time for The Talk”!
With the possibility (Brandon hasn’t said yes or no yet) that Tim is half-Noxian and should be displaying some Noxian features, physically or otherwise, it’s possible Ruth has found some way to make the Change Appearance spell permanent so she wouldn’t have to cast it every night or whenever it wears off. Maybe Ruth should remove the spell in Shadows presence during The Talk? That would be an interesting turn of events!
Mom’s know best .
Not in this case. She pretty much lied to Tim his whole life about being half Nox. And now that he has a complex about wanting to be normal and fit in with human society, the truth is probably gonna hurt.
I love how Ruth REALLY doesnt wanna have to deal lol
She’s probably thinking she’s too old to have to deal with that shit.
Yes, Tom, you should. Ruth will have to suck up whatever misgivings she is having, for the sake of Tim’s future with Shadow.
Tom, put some pants on and go calm down the kids.
Ruth you should maybe call in some Nox reinforcements for backup, like the High Mother, Tim’s aunt & Shadow’s guardian. Well, that’s really only ONE reinforcement after all.
Well I know we don’t get along in the past and even now but you’re right Ruth should definitely get high mother moonlight as for backup do the part that the fact is that’s her sister & Tim’s aunt / shadow’s guardian so you did made a good point there man also i hope that would happen plus I did remember that shadow said the high mother moonlight described her kind & graceful like that a perfect way to stop the argument
Seeing as Ruth is effectively an exile and Shadow is taking a similar path but likely doesn’t want to get exiled if she can avoid it, as well as the fact that I highly doubt any of the Nox know of Tim’s status as a halfbreed, bringing in the Nox would probably be a horrible idea.
We’ve only seen the two mothers speak once before, and I didnt get the feeling Moonie approved of Ruths actions or old choices. I dont think she would approve of Tim and Shadow getting together, much less assist with it.
i agree. Moonie would be very upset
Oh sorry guys it’s just that moonlight is one of my favorite characters from this comic along side Ruth and midnight and I kinda miss seeing her in the future pages so my bad man
Yes. Tomorrow. The middle of the night is a bad time to argue with your son about his now-not-so-secret girlfriend.
Well good point there bro
Why do you think it would be an argument? While Ruth does seem to be in the mood for an argument Tom doesn’t, and waiting for tomorrow seems more problematic than dealing with the issue now.
We all know Ruth just doesn’t want to be bothered to put clothes back on until the sun’s up.
And we all know that she’s probably mentally cursing the pair of teens for having an argument before she could get her nightly fill.
i don’t think she wanted a nightly fill as bad as a nightly sleep xD remember it’s past midnigth
Ruth’s procrastination, probably will make the mess worse, because Tim, and Shadow will have time to stew and Tim might get those three talon scars we saw a long time ago.
Well let’s find out what is gonna happen plus that 3 talon scars i always been thinking about how Tim got those scars ever since when I saw them at the beginning of this comic
I’ve always assumed from day one (well, comic 3) they were from her gripping his back a bit too hard at some point when they were having sex in the past (well, future from the perspective of this comic). It’s still entirely possible that’ll still be happening tonight, of course, but that would require them to make up pretty quickly.
same, bud i’m blaming them in midnight more than shadow right now, and shadow stopping her before he got anything worse
When was that shown? I can’t seem to remember when.
I always thought Tim would of gotten those scars maybe the first time him and shadow had sex but after seeing these last few pages my thoughts have changed
Seems Tim will find out he is half monster.
How long has Ruth planned on keeping Tim’s….otherworldlyness a secret from him? I feel like this whole mess could’ve been avoided if she just told Tim what exactly he is a long time ago.
Well, you know… you can’t tell him when he’s a kid, or else he might go blab it to everybody, then one day it’s 17 years later and where did the time go, ya know?
Well even if he did blab would anybody really believe him? It’s a small kid saying he’s some sort of bed monster human hybrid.
Lucas makes a valid point.
There was a perfect age for them to tell him, but you retconned that age out of the story, there was however a good time to tell him within the story either way… the time when shadow started stealing his sock.
And when was that exactly? I don’t recall.
Linkno, you are very right. Brandon wanted to go from the “they are preteens uninterested in sex” (age 8 in the original version of the webcomic) to “they are bumping uglies” in just a single storyline (the Halloween one) and he decided to do it with a retcon (from 8 to 12 or so) instead of with a timeskip.
In my humble opinion (being serious here! I *know* that’s usually being said in a non-humble way, but THIS time it IS a humble opinion!) he should have gone with a timeskip instead, because of two reasons (well, three actually):
a) the kids’ stuff part is WAY cuter when they are 8-ish
and
b) it allows for greater narrative freedom (read: flashbacks to intermediate ages should his storytelling demand it in the future).
Also,
c) the specific reason you mention, a reason that I hadn’t thought of (that’s part of why I’m honestly being humble here – you’ve just had a better idea than me).
Well, Brandon, maybe it’s a wee bit late for that now – unless you want to retcon the retcon (something that would raise… amusing answers, to say the least), so all that is just academic discussion. Lessons learned for next story 😉
They didn’t want to “bump uglies” during the Halloween arc either… so… yeah. Now that they are in their late teens things are-a-changing though. In my humble opinion, everything is running just fine.
If I need to show something important enough to the story that happened previously along the timeline, I can simply jump back to said event whenever it is necessary. (In fact, we’ll be taking a trip back to that oh-so-important Halloween night again vey briefly to set something up before the chapter is finished!)
No, Ruth, Tim shouldn’t have to try and figure out he’s half-Noxian on his goddamn own, because how the hell is he supposed to even do that? And he shouldn’t have to try and figure out this argument on his own, because there wouldn’t be an argument if you told him the basic, fundamental facts about who he even is. The argument’s your fault, get the hell up and fix it.
I kind of agree. It’s a little irresponsible.
Far more than a little, the kid doesn’t even know half of who he is, begging the question what do they tell him about Ruth’s side of the family.
What she is doing is like a single mother not telling her child who their dad is.
More a more illustrative form would be a racist single mother not telling her child that their father is the same race as the race she has taught her child to hate.
Right I shouldn’t have lowballed. I only said a little because I figured Ruth had her reasons.
Well, time for Mom to dig out that Lion costume.
I like what you did there
Ruth.. now there’s a woman whose a KEEPER! Any woman who wants to sleep naked with you everynight clearly loves the intimacy of your touch.. yeah.. she’s a keeper!
I know the main couple are teens and all but, isnt it a bit early in the plot for Thomas to be quite *that* grey?
It’s one year before the “main time”, so yeah, it’s time for Tom to be that gray.
Besides, I went that gray in my 20s.
Soooo…. what I wonder now is if Mom will reveal herself as a monster to Tim.
This will shatter his life if she does, but I don’t see how she can broach without doing so.
Who’s willing to bet that Tim will faint when his mom reveals her true nature to him?
well considering he has a friend who is a monster and he knows the existence of the lion costume, I would say more of a meltdown than a faint.
Either way, I don’t see Tim taking this well. I smell drama and LOTS of angst. Or at least a healthy amount of angst.
I expect that compassion and loving understanding from Shadow will see Tim safely through that moral crisis.
Though “morality” isn’t really at stake, it’s more an existential crisis.
Yeah, but I don’t expect this to go smoothly before it’s over. Tim really has a complex about wanting to fit in and be normal, so having this news dropped on him that he’s actually far from normal’s likely going to be upsetting. I’m just hoping Brandon handles this with care since this issue is fairly complex. Shadow may have her work cut out for her. Or maybe I’m expecting too much.
Tim has been lied to his entire life by parents who pretended not to know anything about what was going on, there is going to be a strong feeling of betrayal and it is his parents fault. Tom and Ruth are responsible for Tim’s existence, they are responsible for teaching him how to deal with being different, neither one of them had to deal with being 2 different species so they don’t have the right to just act like it is something that he just has to figure out on his own.
I don’t know why, but i thonk if he gets to know that with his actual mentallity he’ll break all the things that capture terror among the world XD (i forget it’s name)
You are talking about the Aegides, right?
Aegides is the plural for Aegis
yes, ty btw :3
You’re welcome 🙂
Hmm… if Tim is a ‘Hybrid’, then why is his physical appearance that of a regular human’s?
Is it just that he got his father’s looks (in every manner)? Or is it a disguise spell cast over him by Ruth?
Or… is it… something else?
