The real question here is will we ever find out why shadow was stealing socks?
Never watched a cheesy/creepy unrequited love movie before? You know the ones that typically have a somewhat plain looking girl desiring the captain of the football team (or simply their good looking more out going male best friend etc) where during their secret crush they would steal little things belonging them to make a ‘love shrine’.
That is in essence what the socks are to Shadow. Even more clearly represented in a recent comic when his picture is added to its center but was pretty clear early on when she was ‘getting his scent’ off them.
It’s a pheromone thing, Shadow is attracted to part of the smell, and most likely does not even know why she does. She is too young to know why she started taking the socks, but after years of interacting with Tim that attraction has turned into young love. So the question is Now does Shadow know she loves Tim or is she just afraid that Tim will lose all interest in her if he gets a Human Girl Friend?
Maybe she just likes the smell of his feet. LOL
Shadow likes smelling them. We’re to assume they smell like Tim and there’s something there in his biology that attracts her.
Yes, John’s right in that Shadow’s attraction to Tim’s socks is “a pheromone thing”.
There’s an experiment that’s been done (the T-shirt experiment – look it up) where random pairs of males and females wear their own T-shirt for 3 days to allow their pheromone-laden shirt to REALLY soak up their personal scent. Then, members of the opposite gender rate each T-shirt for “attractiveness” of the aroma.
Turns out that people with similar or related genetic makeup DISlike the smell while UNrelated or dissimilar genetics find the T-shirt acceptable to attractive.
This is the natural reason that you don’t fuck your sister(s) with all the genetic disease problems which can arise, cousin(s) less stinky so better choice(s).
Isn’t nature wonderful??!!
But, for OUR purposes, it means that Shadow has demonstrated that she’s not related to Tim, because his socks smell so good.

All this could have been avoided if BOTH his parents had told him about what he really was from the time he was cognizant enough to understand.

… also, Tim’s mom MUST know that Shadow has been wanting to get her claws into Tim’s butt and has been letting it happen. Noxians be woke af.
Thank you Bradon. This is a step in the right direction. When Ruth tells Tim what she is, he won’t believe her. She will have to show him her true form.
And this might give Tim an identity crisis. Ruth and Tom should have nipped this in the bud earlier instead of waiting until a more sensitive time like this.
I was so certain that everything would be settled in one night but now I’m nervous, who knows how long it’ll be before Shadow and Tim ever talk again and if she stops visiting him how will they even talk at all? Are you gonna write us a happy ending Brandon? 😁

You do realize we’ve already seen snippets from the distant future where Time and Shadow are VERY MUCH together, right? Specifically, the first half of the very first chapter where Shadow tells Tim he “owes her a scream”?
I did see that and I read the original story but there are subtle differences between them. I’m just so invested in the plot that I want to see how it gets to the conclusion. I kinda feel like I’m being annoying about it though which I hope isn’t bothering anyone.
How does Ruth hold the disguise spell in her sleep? Is she just that much better at magic?
Yes. Absolutely she is. 🙂
so is it more illusionary (as in D&D terms it could be just considered a permanant glamour or phantasmal force) or more along the lines of actual shapechanging similar to mystique/polymorph self/Shapechange
There’s three possibilities for this.
1. It’s a surface level glamor that only affects how they’re perceived. The claws, tail and everything else still exists but they’re just not able to be seen. I don’t buy this is the case.
2. It’s a complete change in that they literally become that which they’re portraying. So Ruth, in her human form, is 100% human. I think this is closer to the truth.
3. It’s magic bitch. Magic flips off all the rules and just makes it’s own. This is the lazy solution. As they said on that episode of The Simpsons, “when something happens that you can’t explain, a wizard did it”.
So why do I say #1 doesn’t work? For the simple reason that a Noxian and human can have a child. Unless you invoke magic again which makes it’s own rules. The only way two organisms can have a child is if they are genetically close. We say that they need to be of the same species. Yes I’m aware of the whole genus thing but often times those offspring don’t survive very long or they’re sterile with lots of other issues. So unless Noxians and humans are somehow sister species or cousins, I don’t see this happening.
It would also explain why a half Noxian and half human would appear completely human. If Ruth is 100% human in her current guise then it would stand to reason that any children she had would also appear human. So this might be part of the reason why Tim’s parents aren’t too worried that Tim and Shadow are going to have sex. She can’t get pregnant from it. The only way possible is for her to become human, like she did during Halloween or Tim embraces his Noxian side.
Think: The Last Unicorn. A Unicorn is magically transformed into a beautiful woman as a disguise to fool the villain of the piece.
Their anatomy is changed completely while the spell is in effect.
