Keep up the good work! Don’t take the flaming in the comments too hard. The comic will come out when it comes out, I’m just happy to see it pop up when I check once or twice a week. You have no obligation to keep a regular schedule, your fanbase is not your employer and these people are overstepping.

For people who doesn’t have patience: Just because Brandon didn’t post yet, it doesn’t mean that he will not continue to make more pages like cmon your the reader not his boss, you can’t expect Brandon to “post” just because it says “mostly sundays” not ALWAYS SUNDAY, also this feels like your favorite youtuber not posting for months and there’s always A REASON, Brandon needs to do other stuff besides the webcomic and I appreciate his work and people have to stop being impatience about it.

Brandon has a full-time job, and works on his comic in his free time. While you go to a cinema, hang out with your friends or go on a date. How ungrateful of him that he sometimes wanta to do the same… .

IT JUST SO HAPPENS that the only person seen in this and all of the comments seen on this page by myself, you’re the only one who is without the “reply” feature.
Now you can suggest its because of a number of replies, but I would wonder if I went back – say a year – and checked to see if number of replies cost others the ability to reply? I bet if I took the time, that wouldn’t be the case.
But as to you so serious claims that I’m mischaracterising you. I’ve not. as is clearly visible – I asked questions as to whether you were being flippant or not, then using your own words to charactise you as being uncaring for your fanbase. You can call that mischaracterisation, its not, its inferring my opinion on you using the available evidence and your own attitude when presented with someone who isn’t kneeling down and sucking your dick 24/7/
If you were to suggest evidence of your that counters my position, showing how altruistic you are towards your fans, how helpful and understanding you are to the fans about issues, that would nullify my position quite candidly.
I don’t think you can, I think that whenever someone asks you “are we getting a page this week?” your response would be one of three
1. family issue came up, sorry
2. outside work came up, sorry
3. I have been stressed so no page this week.
Because those have been the reasons you have given over the last year and a half alone.
Now, it is possible ALL of those times have been real reasons, that you are just one of the most unlucky people in the world, who has a lot of stumbling blocks stopping him doing this as a job – which it is in getting at least 1k a month and at most 4k a month (this is taken from the possible 1 to 4 pages you produce per month as it is “most sundays” and there are usually only 4 sundays in any given month that are counted as part of a pay cycle.)
But a person who is that unlucky is a very rare person, there are people who just are that unlucky during any given year, I personally think that it is at least 6 of one and half a dozen of the other with this(that means that I think half the time you just can’t be arsed) I have no proof of this but it is my gut reaction.
the way you have held yourself during our little conversation has been very illuminating, the people who have rushed to your defense won’t ever listen to a counter, they’re too afraid of you disappearing for good so they’ll shout down any criticism of you in fear of you actually telling everyone to fuck off. I’m not really the one who you should be listening to, my initial comment was a suggestion to help you stop having people spam you week after week with “whens the next page” and you’re still free to take that advice if you want. I doubt you will but whatever.
The people you should be listening to completely are your Patrons, the people who give you money every month, the people you have said “if you don’t produce content, you owe them nothing as they haven’t given you money.” which hints at you being a “per creation” Patreon.
Those people work hard at a job to earn enough money to feed themselves and whatever else, and spend the little extra they may have on you. So you don’t have to go to wal-mart or costco to earn a living, so you can devote more time to creating something they enjoy on their downtime.
Those are the people you should be listening to. And if they’re okay with you treating them badly, that’s fine too, the only thing I think you should be reclassified as is a Findom Artist. Someone who will call his donators “pag pigs” because they’re worth nothing to you.
I’d recommend against it as it will not leave you looking anywhere near good by the end of things, but you will do whatever it you do.
For myself, I won’t be returning to MonsterUnderTheBed, the community seems to be hostile to opinions that are contrary to the immediate fact, the creator seems to be very full of himself and sure of his own brilliance and the website is horribly underutilized with no character pages, no background on creator and plot, no upload and update schedule.
And worst of all, with a webcome that is going on with week per week, the creator sees fit to have no back up for potential injury or drawing equipment loss.
A webcomic that doesn’t have at least a months worth of pages set up and ready to post so that during those times, no traffic stops going to the site, that kind of comic is doomed to failure and obscurity. And rather than stick around like I did with Starline Hodge for several years and 2 failed projects, I’d rather cut my losses now and let you do this until you get bored and stop making it.

I literally did this comic for free for nearly two years until I was convinced by my fans here that I should open a Patreon, so I finally did. The money is a nice bonus, but I don’t need it really, because I have a fairly decent day job already that I work every day from 7:30am to 4:30pm every weekday. Factory work. I’m tired when I get home, but hey, it gives me time to think about my little comic story while I’m doing manual labour all day. Quite frankly, I’m still not convinced patreon is going to stick around for the long run, so I’m not really putting much stock in it. And no, that doesn’t mean I don’t support it, My Patrons get more extras than any of the other places where I usually post.
However, saying that, the extra money did come in handy just last year when my drawing tablet died, and I used my Patreon money to buy a new one so I wouldn’t leave my fans high and dry for too long. Long time fans will absolutely remember that. They can tell you if you would only listen how worried I am all the time that I’ll disappoint them. I HATE it when I miss an update. I’m working hard to get last week’s page finished right now, or I would be getting more done if I wasn’t having to defend myself from your attacks.
You’ve threatened (sorry, warned!) me about the damage to my career as an comic artist, but this *isn’t* my career, as I have told many people, multiple times, this is just a hobby. It’s a hobby! It’s like if you enjoyed building models and posting them on social media, and then someone came along and told you weren’t building them fast enough. Hardlight I am going to try to state this as amicably as possible while still getting the basic point across. The tone of your comments is one of self believed superiority, at times smug and condescending. The length of your comments suggests you have a lot of free time, like to see yourself write, and probably like to hear yourself pontificate. I suggest you stop taking things so seriously, especially things such as an online comic you can simply walk away from at any time and are not required to put in a dime to enjoy. Your feigned concern for others who do donate is unnecessary and apparently unwanted. I suspect you only act concerned to try and justify your actions which are likely more selfish in nature. Your warnings and dire predictions seem an obvious attempt to sway readers to leave, or cause other problems. Since you enjoy writing I humbly suggest you start your own comic and run it the way you want. I for one would sincerely wish you the best of luck. Unfortunately I suspect you lack the desire or drive to do something creative and would rather attempt to tear others down and spend your time endlessly prattling on about the so called shortcomings of others.

Why don’t you go rage on someone like Scott Kurtz over at PVP. Guy has 3 active comics and not a one keeps any regular schedule of updates, he had a collaboration 4th comic with Penny Arcade that just stopped with no reason ever given. The guy is about as rude as possible to anyone who calls him out on it, and his treatment of his fan base is bad, and there are videos of him on YouTube doing it. He calls himself a professional but well I’ll let the video evidence on him let you decide. You seem to make veiled threats about 4chan, then talk about causing Brandon to commit suicide, maybe that isn’t your intent but it sure comes across that way and not only is it creepy it could be considered criminal. I see Brandon is trying to make amends, my hat is off to him he’s more accommodating that I would be. Anyway if you want to be the web police there are plenty of other comics you can go bully. Your suggestions were prefaced with warnings of dire consequences and stated in a way that made them sound more like demands than actual suggestions. Anyway I’m done speaking my mind. Moving forward I shall just politely ignore you. Hopefully you will be mollified by the peace offereing and calm down or move on to your next crusade.
Tonight I sat down and re-read this entire fiasco from start to finish, and I now realize that, yeah, as hard as it is to admit, HardLight was not in the wrong. Re-reading his lengthy and quite frankly daunting responses, what I (and others) at first took as attacks, were hypothetical warnings. Extremely unlikely and vile warnings, but they were coming from a “what if” perspective and not directly from him. I *think*, anyway.
Initially, (well, once this whole thing got really heated) all I saw were threats being directly hurled at me by HardLight: talk of pedophilia accusations and being driven to suicide, or my entire life being ruined by 4chan, calling me names like Cuck and Lolcow (what?) but when I read it all again, he was not suggesting that HE would be the one to ruin me (which is how I took it at first!) I thought he was saying that he was threatening to go to 4chan himself and bring them here to attack me, and that certainly made me see red, but as I just said, I think it was all hypothetical. Perhaps worded somewhat unclearly, I don’t think HardLight meant any direct harm to me.
I did find it extremely odd how on one hand he told me how much he liked the comic, and on the other he seemed willing to burn it to the ground, but now this make much more sense with his “threats” being of a hypothetical nature. Haha.
Although he did somewhat unfairly (I think!) compare me to Spoony (who was on top of his game, got in over his head, was bi-polar, was involved in a ton of drama and spiraled into obscurity) which I don’t really think is exactly fair to me, who realistically isn’t that well known in comparison, has barely any drama going on at all (except page updates being missed due to life stuff, which isn’t exactly drama…) and I *AM* still putting out content, albeit very slowly and when I can manage it. Which I apologize for to anyone reading this, but I have no intention to quit! If it seems like I am starting to falter in any way, trust me, I am of no mind to ever stop. I may need a break from time to time, but I really want to finish this project to the end! It will be my life’s work probabaly. (Maybe, haha)
The past few days, I have been extremely stressed out by all of this, to the point that I have felt sick, however re-reading it has really changed my perspective. I think had this all been talked about in shorter, more concise posts; or if it had been over an instant messanger or something, all of this could have been cleared up and avoided altogether.

Well all I can add is that you certainly weren’t the only one who took what he wrote that way so don’t be too hard on yourself. As you say, perhaps that isn’t what was intended but when I see him calling anyone who defended you or agreed with you a “sycophant”
Sycophant synonyms: toady, creep, crawler, fawner, flatterer, flunkey, truckler, groveller, doormat, lickspittle, kowtower, obsequious person, minion, hanger-on, leech, puppet, spaniel, and I think you get the idea.
I tend to think he meant it exactly as it was first taken or at the very least close to how it was taken. In his defense he seemed pretty worked up by that point, so maybe he was writing emotionally. One thing I like to always point out is that in conversations such as this there is time to stop, think, calm down, and then respond. I tend to rewrite something at least 4 times before I send it especially I am angry. That little trick has saved me at work numerous times.
Words have power and must be used carefully. I’m not sure how much care was used in his case but as you said Brandon we can all misinterpret and our natural reactions can make things escalate. Instead of saying “you are doing this wrong and terrible things will happen if you continue” perhaps say “you are doing this pretty good but i think it could be better if you considered doing it like this”. All seems quiet, perhaps he has cooled off as well, or perhaps he moved on to something else. Either way I wish you and him nothing but the best. We should all focus our energies on the positive and less on the negative.
Yes, he definitely said some vile things which were pretty uncalled for, given the circumstances. There was never any need to bring up those horrible accusations at all (even as examples) and by doing so, that is what REALLY made me upset. I consider myself quite lucky to have as many positive people here as I do, and even people I’ve had some problems with are still here and I consider them my friend. (I’m looking at you Dark at Hearts! Our old argument over Midnight now seems extremely quaint by comparison, haha. The good ol’ days! XD)
Also, he threw my patrons under the bus needlessly as there is really no problem there, and he seemed adamant that I was messing with him by preventing him from continuing speaking in his original thread (which DID have a limit of 5, as did everyone from the beginning, but is now 10 thanks to this episode!) When he could have just started a new thread like anybody else would have (which he did!) and would not accept my explanation, or anyone else’s for that matter about the subject. I don’t even have the ability to close a thread like that, my only option is to edit or delete it completely. XD
Even so, I’m going to chalk it up to anger on both sides, all caused by my misunderstanding initially. I feel he may have chosen to edit his words afterward, had he the option to do so, but sadly you guys can’t edit your posts… again, limitations of WordPress as a platform.

On a new note. These may be questions you have answered before or don’t want to answer so I’m going to ask but just tell me “no comment, or mind my own business” if it’s something you don’t want to discuss or point me towards a page’s comments if it is something you have answered and don’t want to rehash. I read a lot of comics, of varying regularity of updates, size, and popularity. It’s a hobby of mine, I’ve always liked Manga, Anime, and independent works. I’m not trying to shine you on when I say this but I think your work is good, like really good. Your story is quite good as well. Have you ever pursued drawing as a career? If so how did it go and if not why? I’m no expert, I mean I did study architecture in college and did some CAD drafting designing housing subdivisions for a land surveying company but I’m no art expert. My freehand drawing was always just above what I considered rudimentary at best but I think your work looks comparable to professional work I’ve seen, as well as some “successful” web comics, hard copy comics, and manga out there, It’s better than quite a few others I’ve seen in my opinion. Anyway just curious. Also curious what web comics you enjoy. A lot of times a creator will post a list of comics they like/read on their page with links to them. It seems a nice way to network and a lot of times those creators will be willing to link to yours if you contact them, which helps readership grow.

Well some of those are friends and others we’ve made a deal to cross promote, I actually only read 2 of those comics myself. XD
I’ve been drawing my whole life for as long as I can recall, never striving for realism at all, but I’ve always enjoyed a more cartoonish lean in my work.
When I was way younger, like, back in grade school, I always thought about going into animation or something, but there are no jobs like that around here at all (at least back then) and I really didn’t want to move far away from my family, which is quite important to me. SO, I just kept doing it as a hobby. Doing pin-ups and such at first, which built a sort of fanbase in the early days of my “digital artist” time, but I really wanted to tell an actual story. I had a lot of ideas in my head. I’m kind of a dreamer that way.
So, one day I just kinda said to heck with it, let’s do it!
And now here I am!
And maybe you’d be surprised to find I DON’T read that many other comics, I used to, but a lot of them have ended now. I’ve been lucky to have only ever read one web comic that was abandoned, and I swore that I would never do that to my fanbase.

I really really love that last panel. Completely different than anything in the comic. It’s witty and simplistic Style just pops. I think you need to do more of that eye glowing thing. Don’t see it enough.

Hey guys, I’m really sorry about the drama here the past two days. If it keeps up I WILL be forced to do something about it.
I’ve worked out my problems here fairly amicably when they did happen in the past, but this stuff is on a whole other level. So… yeah. If it continues, I’m gonna have to do what needs to be done.
I sincerely hope the actions of a few bad apples don’t result in the loss of all, but I understand you have to do what you have to do. I hope you consider all options. In the past I have seen comments threads that have turned too toxic put on pause for a “cooling off period” and then restarted, sometimes with a form of moderation to weed out the trolls. I have seen some change format to a forums board with set rules and moderators and unfortunately I have seen some completely remove all commenting. I hope you are not forced to do the last one as it seems to remove a sense of community and related form of enjoyment fans get from talking, asking questions and trying to guess what happens next. I actually typically don’t comment often but I’ve seen this before and felt like I should say something. Take it as you will. I give free unsolicited advice with zero expectations on how it is received. You can tell me to go pound sand and I’ll understand perfectly.
Nah, I’m not closing the comments, I was just tired and didn’t want to deal with this stuff, and it apparently was taken as a signal to go full on ape shit.
Take your time, Brandon. People know that you have a life outside this comic. Your life doesn’t revolve around this web comic, which I believe is AMAZING. This a hobby that you CHOOSE to do, and if you need a break to have time to yourself, you should do it. I’m sure people will understand that.

Well Brandon I so sorry this has happened to you I really appreciate this comic that you created like I been waited patiently until every Sunday so I see what gonna happen next on every page to entertain ,coped with , drawing fan art & share with my therapist so what does she think about it plus she loves the story lines in the panels besides I hope this won’t creep you out ( if I did I am sorry ) I am just trying to cheering you up so you don’t feel like shit just to be thoughtful so that me & the true fans to have faith in you so you can have enough encouragement to make your day better & to treat you better respect for your hard work so have a nice life ps just let you know that I am not trying to spam you or anything like that just trying make you have a better day

The fact he’s threatening to try and do you and your website harm exposes him for what he truly is. The feigned concern for others is just a ploy to try and gather support from those easily influenced. As far as I know nobody is forced to donate and those that do can stop at any time therefore I don’t see what the problem is. I seriously doubt Hardlight has donated one cent as well so he/she probably has no “skin in the game” so to speak. Typically folks like HL first try to get a rise from their targets, and if they can’t get you angry then they threaten to try and make you worry. They feed off of this. Block them and they just spring back up as a new name and use your actions as “proof” they are right and you are wrong or you wouldn’t have banned them etc. Seen it before. Definitely keep screenshots of their threats and everything they say. Hopefully they will get bored if nobody pays attention to them and move on to their next target. Make sure your web security is up to date, and if you start seeing a lot of new web traffic and people commenting negatively then might be the time to be concerned and consider drastic measures but hopefully it won’t come to that.

IMNSHO, 4chan is home to the dregs of the internet, people who live to hate because they don’t think anyone else on the internet is real, other than their fellow haters (and even then I wouldn’t be surprised). Never heard of 8chan before, but any of the num-chans aren’t worth getting involved with. Really, they think that “ignore functions violate free speech”, forgetting that while they do have the right to spew any bullshit they like (at least in the US and like-minded countries), everyone else has the right to not pay any attention to their bullshit.
And honestly, if he or his 4chan buds gives you any more shit, I’d help chip in the legal expenses to slap him upside the head with a C&D order. 🙂
