I think since Tim’s density towards Shadow’s feelings caused her to vent to Midnight, ultimately leading to Nightmare overhearing.

I don’t know why I’m even arguing any other way; I purposely wrote the whole story to be like a set of dominoes that began to fall the minute Tim woke up and saw Shadow staring back at him, the argument just set off multiple paths all doing their own thing.
