Spell components often require an ARTIFACT as well as the verbal text.
The spellbook is such an artifact.
If it’s not in Shadow’s possession (ie there’s no psychic connection) then …pfft…, the spell fizzles.
Unless Ruth had two copies of the book, that can’t be so.
Probably the complexity argument. Ruth has been using it for many years, she has certainly memorized it by now. Shadow had used it only a few times.
She used the spell once when she was 12, then gave the book back. It’s probably a little more complex than “bibbity-bobbity-boo.”

Just reread the start of Chapter 4 and encountered an interesting tidbit of info I’d forgotten or failed to notice:
All these shenanigans with Marcy happened ONE YEAR IN THE PAST! It’s not the current time.
Then again, the end of Chapter 1 (noted as the present day) has Tim and Shadow wake up together… sans clothes…
This is a really bad idea. Also it is worth noting that Marcy’s breasts look pretty bad, it feels like she is not a teenager, but a woman over forty with three children.
Likely just a well developed young woman that thinks it is okay to skip wearing a bra. Not out of the question so long as she doesn’t do any running etc.
Also the artist is trying to obey the laws of physics. You are used to what you see WITH a bra.
Ask a woman.

That thing does ride higher than I first thought with the waist line being more like just under those torpedo tits instead of at where her waist would be. This is showing that Tim’s either really fucking dumb or kind of a shitty person. His last encounter with Shadow saw them having the biggest fight of their relationship and Tim said some things that really hurt Shadow. Why the hell does he think it’s okay to dictate Shadow’s actions here? There isn’t even the inkling of him having room to just surprise Shadow and hope it all turns out well. On the same page, he doesn’t have the clout with Shadow right now to convince her to just show herself to other humans voluntarily. So the only way he could do this is by just not talking to Shadow beforehand and hope it all turns out okay. Ultimately, this doesn’t look good for his character AT ALL.
Shadow IS the reason this is happening! Shadow made the decision to go into Marcy’s room with Tim’s scissors and cut Marcy’s hair. If she had been thinking properly none of this would be happening right now and Tim could get into some serious trouble with the law. So Tim is backed into a corner because of Shadow’s actions and it’s not like Marcy or Mark gave him time to come up with a plan so what do you expect him to do?
IMHO she’s not THAT likely to actually report it to police.
You know it’s just going to devolve into a comedy, right? Like always?

Do you really think inviting the girl that your girlfriend is jealous of, over to meet her, is a good idea? Passing the buck isn’t gonna work. You, yourself, need to repair the relationships with each girl. Otherwise, you’re gonna get slapped 6 ways to Sunday by both of ’em when they realize you’re abdicating your responsibilities.
Or… now here me out here… everyone can talk and maybe some truths start coming out! Marcy is the PUSH that gets Tim and Shadow together, after all.

In a perfect world, the result of Tim, Marcy and Shadow meeting would be, like the Xanth books put it, …
But judging by the story, Shadow will rage from jealousy and break Marcy’s and Craig’s mind in tiny little pieces.
Also, the way you draw breasts is perfectly fine, very natural. Even the boobs of teenage girls can sag (because gravity exists), no matter the size, and it doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t firm to the touch. It all depends how broad the “base” of a breast and how toned the muscle supporting it is, after all.
And how tight they wear their bras. The structure supporting the underside of the breasts can be damaged if the bra is worn too tight (giving the appearance of greater uplift) and doesn’t repair itself if/when damaged, causing the sag. (Yes, age can take it’s toll too, but a tightly worn bra will accelerate the process.)
The issue just got larger!
