Shadow’s adopted, as far as I remember. Mother is just a tittle that everybody calls her by.

by the way, i expected some chapter of prequel how the young Thomas met with the young Ruth

I don’t know about anyone else but these two remind me of the sisters Eda & Lillith from The Owl House.
I can see that(except Ruthless is older than Moonlight).
