May be a visual representation. But…
Remember, she did study the whole grimoire, and possibly more of that. It won’t be overboard if she has several tools to much the same effect with different optimization: a full shapeshifting disguise spell that’s high quality and can be used for long term appearances when multiple people may pay attention or bump into her and a very basic visual disguise spell that’s low-effort and used mostly as a stopgap solution or at home.
Magical energies.. that create a portal from location a to location b? This has been done in many stories shows and movies before. its just the remaining energy from the portal that was there before.
2. Translocation in general, and portals in particular, needs to do a lot of “little things” to be viable (at least if you think things through better than Jules Verne). It would be weirder if there were no side effects whatsoever.
We didn’t see anyone casually tossing unattached objects through Nox portals before (or as much as using them in undue haste), so why not this.
1) A shadow is always ephemeral, it needs a light source and an observer to exist.
Ruth is alone at home and there’s no observer (in HER world. We readers are insubstantial to the characters and, even though we observe we are not ‘observers’ in the true sense of the word. {Regard this as your first lesson in Graphic Magic}
2) This is more advanced work. You may need a tutor in Portal creation & Control after you have passed your studies in Ephemera.
Brandon is always present, though often unobservable.
A photon with wavelength of 700nm won’t became red until it hits retina of human. The house WILL lose it’s colours when noone looks at it. Also, house stops being house the moment it stops being inhabited, although it can take months before the roof and walls physically change.
Meanwhile, some parts of wall can get less light than others, but you need observer to say it’s shadow, and to say shadow of WHAT it is.
Some things work according to physics even in a fictional universe. Colors only exist in our brain, outside that colors don’t exist, so you can safely say a house doesn’t have colors regardless of whether anyone looks at it or not. A shadow is a different phenomenon. An observer is not required for them to exist. A shadow is an area behind an object (or person) blocking some light from a light source. It’s an invisible area until said light hits a surface that can reflect it. That is true even if there’s no observer. You know that you have a shadow in the sunlight, even if you’re facing toward the Sun (not observing your shadow). Night time is the shadow of Earth that exists even if everyone’s asleep (= not observing).
I remember Al Bundy wondering about his socks. “Something dark and mysterious is going on so I know a woman is involved. So, tell me, Peg, what is Oprah telling you to do with our socks?”
You could hand wave this as “The disguise is a mental thing. Does not effect shadows.”. This would require cameras to see the real appearance. Not sure if that has been shown.
This is a fairly common meme for magic illusions in fantasy.
Now, it would be funny if next time we see present-day Ruth she would be without disguise, implying she dropped her disguise in middle of explanation and noone noticed.
Un vendredi, je ne l’avais pas vu venir… Bah, pourquoi pas après tout. Cela semble être une page liée au passé lorsque Shadow et Tim se sont rencontrés.
Hmmm… Interesting. The shadows are a nice touch. I’m guessing altering her shadow would require a second spell or another layer on the spell she has, so her natural shadow being clear is kinda her equivalent of ‘bumming around the house half dressed’.
Not entierly. Read books where magic and portals leave behind a residue or trace that someone sensitive enough can pickup for a while. In some instances the trace will even have a unique signature tired to the one who cast it allowing someone with enough knowledge to trace the source.
These are advanced skills.
Reading about them in fictional works is a “beginner’s primer” but it takes several years of study and practice to achieve, (maybe even a decade).
Now, Ruth(less), you shouldn’t be angry with your son just because he opened an unlocked bedroom door while you and Thomas were engaged in a little sexy role-play.
So Ruthless was shadow banned from Nox? (sorry, had to with the earlier comments…)
Since at this point, Tim still hasnt put 2+2 together about the golden lion, and we’ve never seen Shadow get technical on portal charge or theory when telling Tim of Nox, his expression on the next page should either be priceless or asleep.
1). I see Ruthie’s real shadow. Is that not covered by the spell?
2). Portal charge? How does that work?
Welcome back. Great work on this page.👍👍

Aww, you beat me to ‘the Shadow knows!’ comment 😛

I think the shadow is just there for flavor. Like yeah she’s secretly a monster. It’s for our convenience more then anything.
What range of flavours do shadows (not Shadow) have?
Dunno? None?
flavor for the storie, and the very feew people who forget/ don’t understend who she realy is)
Thank you for that Mr Serling.

We know exactly what’s happening to his socks
when did she change clothes?

Oh so mom got a much more direct clue. a zap!
Does her shadow always give away her true form and Tim just never noticed? Interesting.
She seriously needs to be in monster form after this flashback.. like just poof.. It’ll make things much easier.
Thanks for the new page Brandon! 🙂
A residual portal charge… that’s new. Deus ex machina!

New for this comic, as far as I recall.

Why would it be a “deus ex machina”? I think you misuse the term.
Only insofar as an element added to the story largely for convenience sake. Spoken mainly in jest, of course.
I’m surprised Timmy isn’t snarking over the flashback
Tim; “Now…wait? A ‘remnant portal charge’? How do you know what that is?”
Dad: “You’re not the first person to have a relationship with someone from Nox.” (gestures to Mama Ruth…)
BIG REVEAL!
(We hope. Finally?)
