#149 “Family”
And so, Chapter 3 comes to a close… and the real story begins!
Here’s a major ‘Thank you!’ to everybody for following along with the little one-man show I’ve been putting on these past 3 years, I can’t imagine I would have ever gotten this far into this project without your support and love along the way! I do it for you guys!
That being said, I have to tell you all that I am going to take a break from the comic for a little while. Now, don’t worry! I’m not going on indefinite hiatus or anything like that, I simply need a bit of a vacation to refresh myself. As you are probably aware, the schedule has been rather tenuous at best lately, and I feel I am creatively fatigued, and lately physically so.
Last week, due to whatever circumstance, my drawing hand/wrist was causing me problems (tiredness, numbness), perhaps due to over-exertion at both my day job (factory work) and working on the comic too. It lasted nearly a week, however, today everything seems to be okay again. *phew* I’ll be monitoring the situation in the meantime, and acting accordingly.
Over the break, I will not be gone away. I’ll be working a bit behind the scenes, planning and scripting, and, yes, even building up a buffer without the pressure of a time constraint. Perhaps I’ll do a bit of work on the site itself, so stay tuned for the next update. If you have any questions, go ahead and ask! I read everything in the comment section.
I expect to be away at least one (1) month or so, though I shall judge how I feel at the time.

One thing I noticed was Tim’s belt buckle.
I can hardly wait for the page where Shadow is officially revealed to Tim’s parents. (I know mom already knows about her, though.)

Glad to hear you’re taking a break Brandon, you deserve it. Get plenty of rest, and we’ll look forward to whenever you feel up to restarting the comic! In the meantime, I’ll just reread the comic again, and hopefully catch some things I missed the first time.

So my question is this:
Is tim genetically half noxian or is the magic that his mother uses to appear human more of a transformative thing that makes her fully human while it’s in effect? I ask this because the belt buckle might indicate more than we think if he has Noxian traits that we just haven’t seen as of yet.
I think he’s half noxian. I don’t think his mom normally stays transformed when they are alone. They didn’t on Halloween. I have a feeling the first time Tim walked in on them it was either because they thought Tim might barge in, or they knew Shadow was creeping about and didn’t want her to find who she really was.
Ruth is actually quite accustomed to her human form, having lived that way for much of her time, for years. She changes back to her original form only when it’s completely safe.
Shadow, on the other hand, hates disguising herself and will only do it if she absolutely needs to. Sort of like her relationship with underwear. She’s a free sprit, that one.

I noticed that in the last panel the splits in Ruth’s skirt also demonstrate that, this time at least, she’s also free from artificial constraints.

Doesn’t lack of tail and extra finger cause some dissonance?

Who said that noxians and humans are separate species? How would they interbreed then, huh?;) Maybe Noxians is just a form humans have in Nox? Yeah, sure, Shadow, Ruth and others keep their form later, but hopefully you get what I mean.
We already have examples of interbreeding between different strands (strains) of the human line.
Archaelogical evidence has been found of interbreeding between homo sapiens sapiens and homo neanderthalensis AND homo sap. sap. with Denisovans (neither of which strains still exist separately in their original form).
Many scientists still consider the Neanderthal and Denisovan to be far enough removed from the H. Sap, sap. genetic line to be separate species.
The Nox tail, quadridactylism and nocturnal eye formations are already known in H. sap. sap. populations (although often considered “deformities” to be “cured” )and so their genetic lines are close enough for fertile mating to be easily achieved.
Go for it, Shadow & Tim and the rest of you, too!
Not to be too heavy-handed about upcoming plot here, but I will say that before the end of the comic, I will be exploring the true* origins of both Humanity and the Nox.
*True, within this fictional universe.

How long? No clue. A good long while yet, even if my hand falls off. I’ll hire another artist to finish it while I write. ;-P
Brandon maybe if that happens hire someone from this site that can draw.(I’m not talking about myself)
*IF* it ever came to that, I would like to get somebody who could somewhat match my style, or, actually produce higher quality artwork than I can.
Though I think I’ll be fine in the end, so no worries.

I’m sorry but I had to say something… Ruth’s hand is funny looking. I don’t know how to draw but the one thing I do know is that hands suck to draw especially when drawing with a fucked up rist. Anyway I hope you have a great vacation you deserve it.
wow 3 years, you are doing a good work and made too much people fall in love for this story.
and over all, after 100+ pages of a story any one will be tired or with inspiration problems, I guess.
Then have a nice break and come back again with more energy.

Two things:
1- Enjoy your break Brandon! You’ve certainly earned it! My webcomic partner, Tennine, had a similar time where her wrist hurt and she just felt like she was out of juice, creatively. We took hiatus and worked on our script and just generally didn’t worry about posting for a few weeks and it really helped!
Your comic is one of the best out there, imho, and I can’t wait to read further!
