Don’t know how old you are, Tinkercat, but one one the most gut-wrenching UNfunny things a guy can be told is that his female partner (or, in this case, one of them) has an unwanted and unplanned pregnancy.
I understand that. But what I’m saying is, did he want a child or not?? His dialogue later on makes it confusing.
Just as Victorian era females were said to be reluctant to marry – depending on how strict their father / brother was, they didn’t want to voluntarily become a slave, modern guys have the same choice. Once they are tagged as being responsible for a child (not the same thing as being the actual father mind you), they are essentially a slave.
To be sure, the female is also up for the long haul, but she has the option, in theory at least, of giving the child up for adoption. Or something more drastic, if early enough.
