If its an M, then we are seeing the back of the book. Such logos usually are on the front, which would make it a W. Of course this assumes Noxxians read left to right as we do. Brandon?
Words have power beyond comprehension both spoken and unspoken. I’m reminded of a few movies/books/series’ where someone picks up a grimoire and reads a bit either silently or out loud and instantly wishes they hadn’t. Legend of Earthsea mc almost dooms himself and others in a few seconds just reading a few lines from a book. Is this a zombie? The necromancer doesn’t speak exactly for this reason. And when she actually does… Telling someone “die” while out of earshot of everyone else, makes it happen. Many other instances of similar happenings.
Considering what she said about how sensitive the tips of their tails are, it could be that clutching it protectively like that is an instinctive response to what is perceived as extreme danger.
In essence, if a ‘monster’ does that, they’re terrified.
This was addressed in earlier comments. Monsterpeople world has a very high emphasis on simply keeping your nose out of other people’s business. I assume if someone got caught snooping past those beads without Shadow’s consent, they’d have some serious ‘splaining to do.
Exemplary craftsmanship as expected, profound work as always, Brandon — mind ’tis only my humble opinion. One thing many would agree with is your active participation in the comments section. For instance, many small details you delicately put into your work would have been missed entirely without your interference. Forgive my pointless rambling, let’s get deep into the matter!
A whole bunch of folks have come to a conclusion which I can’t possibly agree with. There is no way Ruth is Lady Blackheart, at least that’s not how I interpret it. However, there might be obvious foreshadowing that I’m just too stupid to correctly assemble into coherent wording. Title such as “The Missing Mother” definitely rings a bell for me. I could be on a wrong track, as it usually goes, unless she upholds a combination of a honorary and a factual title! (The title of a “Mother”). What if Lady Moonlight has some integral information for the plot development? (Rest assured, she probably does regardless of my wild ideas). Why would Lady Blackheart help Shadow? Why “the book” are so important? Isn’t Terminus looking for that exact copy in the library? Hehe, now THIS is a collection of hints without a strict answer! Now, I’ve read what one would call a ‘script’ just out of sheer curiosity, but now I feel like a spoiled child. Mind, I only read two ‘parts’, but they describe the events way faster than the comics. Will *that ending* happen under the same circumstances? It is obvious that some characteristics differ greatly: shadow has wings in the writing, and so on.
Now, all what is left is to wait 7 days, or to commit a sin (read the script). No, I shall not do that, not after I found out something I am clearly not supposed to know.
Coming from someone that has ready all of this story from the original ‘script’ as you call it, i can still say that even though i know where this is going, i am still thoroughly enjoying the journey, there already have been slight variations here, but just enough to add more body to the story. your theories on Lady Blackheart and Lady Moonlight are intriguing, and although i believe i have the answers i will not be spoiling anything here throwing around ideas that may be changed on us anyhow.
on a side note i am also interested in the exclusion of the wings for the “monster” race in this medium. Was this simply down to a creative decision? Or are there other marvelous ideas swirling around in Brandon’s head?
thought that it would be something like that, although i admit i did not get to the obvious and logical conclusion that subterranean don’t need wings. *facepalm*
Ok, this answers a question I asked a while ago, “Do people think adult Tim is gay?” All we need now is a pair of girls (because you know Midnight will get in on this) transferring to Tim’s school. I think their aegis might explode the first time the teacher says pop quiz. Or seeing them in home economics when they find out they can bake their own cookies.
Well I think Lady Blackheart looks extremely similar to Ruth! D:
– Mole left side under the mouth ✔
– Hair color ✔
– Hair curl length ✔
– Lipstick ✔
– Breast size ✔
Seems more and more obvious to me! 😀
Except of course;
Tim hasn’t got a tail.
Tim hasn’t got a mouth like a Timber Wolf.
Tim hasn’t got ears like a Forest Goblin.
Tim lives in a house with a hot Mom and a self employed Dad.
Other than that, yes, your probably on to something.
This doesn’t mean that Lady Blackheart could not be Ruth, or for that matter, somehow who may know Ruth.
However, if Lady Blackheart was Tim’s Mom, Tim would not be human, or more likely, only part human.
Or perhaps your just over looking the Obviuos like perhaps Tim was from another marrage or even that like in many cases His human Traits are dominant in the Mix.
Iain, there are two major options: either Noxxians can cross-breed with humans or they can’t. If they cannot breed, then Tim is not Lady Blackheart’s son and Tim can never have kids with Shadow.
If they CAN cross-breed, there are two paths that have been followed in other stories. In one, the child has randomly selected traits from both parents and is clearly neither Human nor Noxxian. Tim doesn’t show such characteristics, so he’s either not a cross or Brandon isn’t doing things that way.
The other way is to have the child appear to be of one race or the other, with unnoticeable traits from either side. In this case, it’s usually the father who determines things. In this case, a Noxxian father produces Noxxian children with a human and a human father produces human children with a Noxxian mother.
And all of the stuff above assumes Brandon doesn’t just do things his own way in his own story.
Wait, what?
Timeskip forward?
Huh?
Uh, huh?
Confused.
No, it’s still the same night that’s been going on since Tim and Shadow kissed & Lady Blackheart showed up. It’s been a looong night!
But it’s almost over.
Ah. Sorry. Thought the hair design on Shadow looked like older Shadow. Totally my bad there.
She just let her hair down. Look at the first page of the first chapter; she keeps her hair up in “horn-tails” even as an adult.
It just looked long here. Even when pulled up, it looked like she kept it short. Seeing long hair just confused me.
Well, that’s not 100% true, I’ve retroactively made her to be feeling ‘nostalgic’ that particular night, so she can wear her hair however she likes. 😉
What harm ever came from reading a book?
And what ever could that W on the cover stand for?
W for waffles of course! Or is it meant to be an M?
If its an M, then we are seeing the back of the book. Such logos usually are on the front, which would make it a W. Of course this assumes Noxxians read left to right as we do. Brandon?
W is Wumbo, of course! I wumbo, you wumbo, he/she wumbo! It’s first grade!
I understood that reference.
I understood THAT reference.

Why shadow is holding her tail like this ?
Is she feeling embarassing ?
Looks like she’s praying…
Considering what she said about how sensitive the tips of their tails are, it could be that clutching it protectively like that is an instinctive response to what is perceived as extreme danger.

Nerves, I’d think.
The plot thickens ! (eh, “plot”)
Beaded doorway curtain, Shadow? How retro! Where’s the lava lamp? 🙂

It’s the apparent norm in her world.
True, privacy is paramount in their world.
Groovy!
“Today’s program is brought to you by the letter M”

I dropped the wings because subterranean creatures really don’t need them, and because I didn’t want to have to draw them every page forever.
thought that it would be something like that, although i admit i did not get to the obvious and logical conclusion that subterranean don’t need wings. *facepalm*
Oooh plot!
If I’ve learned anything never trust mysterious women trying to give a tempting book… mysterious men its 50/50.
Something about Shadows expression in the last panel makes her seem quite a bit younger and also reminds of the cute cobras from SkinHorse.
The comics look great as always Brandon can’t wait to see what the deal with the books is though

i feel the 2nd last panel looks off ? i dunno what it is eyes closed while stating a shocked statement?
i dunno – but yay! thanx for new page 😀
It’s more like she’s crying out in exasperation.
oh ok 🙂
when i look at it i feel her expression in panel 3 switched with panel 6 would look neat too.
So when is Sunny gonna give Midnight the tap on the shoulder about threatening Tim? She does seem to be shipping Tim and Shadow after all.
Well I think Lady Blackheart looks extremely similar to Ruth! D:

Indeed. Its almost like they are drawn by the same artist?
Except of course;
Tim hasn’t got a tail.

Ha, very well reasoned theories on the whole genetics thing. 😉
And all of it without telling any part of the story from the original text!
Love Shadow’s hair she has the best hair out of all the bed bugs when its down.
Brandon how’s Patreon getting a crazy requests yet.
Not really anything out of the ordinary, no. XD
the encyclopedia had the letter “M” on it.
could it hint to Lady Darkheart’s real name?
or does it have a lot of hidden Monster “M” words?
I believe thats a W. Look at which way the spine is facing
